What to Expect

Attending a church for the first time can be a little un-nerving. We want you to know that Maury Hills is an open fellowship. We welcome people from all different walks of life and religious backgrounds. We work hard to create an atmosphere of love & acceptance. We're by no means a perfect fellowship, but we strive to follow God & the Bible to the best of our ability. Below are a few questions that people usually have before visiting worship. If we didn't ask your question, please send us an email.

What is worship like?

Our worship consists of singing, prayers, communion (Lord's Supper), and a message from the Bible. The singing is a cappella, meaning that we worship without instruments. This is by choice, rather than doctrine. We find nothing wrong with instrumental worship, but believe that the voice alone is a simple & beautiful way to worship God. The prayers & communion will be led by different men in the congregation and the message will be delivered by Russ Adcox, our preaching minister. It usually lasts around 30 minutes and is presented on a level that everyone can understand.

Am I allowed participate?

Absolutely! We encourage everyone to participate in our worship. There are several ways to do this...

  1. In song. Our singing is congregational meaning that everyone sings together. The words are provided on the screen and we encourage you to join us. You don't need a great voice, just sing to God from your heart.
  2. In communion. Communion is open to anyone who wants to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You do not have to be a member to participate.
  3. In prayer & thought. Throughout worship you'll have lots of opportunity for silent prayer and/or personal reflection. We encourage you to listen to the message and let God speak to your heart through his Word.

But do I have to participate?

No. While we encourage you to do so, we don't force it. You are welcome to just sit back and watch.

How long does it last?

Our worship typically lasts about an hour and 10 minutes. (9:00-10:10 AM or 10:30-11:40 AM). Both services are the same so just choose the time that is most convenient.

What do I wear?

You'll find a little of everything at Maury Hills. A few will be in coats & ties, a few in jeans, and maybe even a few in shorts. We can assure you that you won't find our preacher in a tie. He usually wears kakis and a polo-type shirt. We don't make a big deal about dress. Just come as you are.

What do I do with my kids?

If your kids are 2 years old or less they can attend one of our two nurseries. Each is well-staffed and you'll be given a pager if we need to contact you during worship. If they are 2 years through 4th grade they can attend one of our children's ministry groups. These are interactive times of worship & learning that's on their level! Registration for these groups can be found in the main hallway of the children's wing. All of our programs are well-staffed with volunteers and the registration system insures safe pick-up and drop-off. Of course, if you're uncomfortable dropping off your kids on the first visit that's no problem. You're welcome to stay with them in the children's ministry or they can attend worship with you. More info on children's ministry.
