Our Story
The story of Maury Hills began in August
of 2001. That month a handful of families from different
churches in the community began meeting together in their homes.
They dreamed of a new kind of church in Maury County. The dream was for a
church where people . . .
- people be welcomed
without judgment or condemnation.
- people who have been
hurt by church or a legalistic faith can find health, hope, and
healing.
- people could experience
the freedom of God's grace and the power of God's love.
- people could begin
a real relationship with Christ and grow spiritually together.
That
dream became a reality on September 30th of 2001. That
night, 60 people met together for worship, prayer and planning. The name “Maury
Hills” was chosen, a meeting place was secured, and three men were
appointed to serve as shepherds. One week later, on October
7th of 2001, they held their first Sunday worship service in
the old First Baptist building in downtown Columbia.
Since
that first meeting, the story of Maury Hills has been exciting and
ever-changing. Yet, it has not been perfect. We've experienced both
success and failure as a church and God has used both experiences
to grow us closer to Him. Through our successes we have learned to
be thankful and trust God's leading. Through our failures we
have learned what it means to be broken and humble before God. Our
story is ultimately a story about God and how He has worked through
our weakness in order to demonstrate His strength!
Perhaps,
our story is best told in the changed lives and renewed spirituality
of those who worship here. Here's a few comments from some
of our members about what this church has meant to them . . .
"This
church meant a new walk with Jesus for me, my husband, and our children."
"Maury
Hills has been a place of love and healing for me. I feel
like finally 'I belong!'"
"When
I went through the most difficult time in my life, this church came
together and rallied around me with unconditional love and support."
"Maury
Hills has been the answer to my prayers. A church that judges
people not by their past but accepts them for what the future offers."
"God's
grace and love abounds here, accepting me as I was and allowing
me to grow in Christ. A non-judgemental church that gave me
a second chance."
"One
of the greatest blessings to me has been that the people are open
minded and willing to grow in Christ. They are people who just want
to grow in love."
"This
church has reminded me what it was like to have a church family
that loves and cares for everyone. I am thankful for everyone
that this church has brought into my life."
"I
guess at most of the churches I have attended, I felt that I needed
to go to be saved and to be guided. Here I feel the love of
God, I feel that I want to love Him and love other people more than
ever before."
